A legendary Serbian cake created in the early 1900s as a gift of gratitude from a mother-in-law to her son-in-law, Vasa. Rich walnut filling, orange-scented syrup, and a glossy chocolate glaze make this one of Serbia’s most iconic desserts.
Combine sugar and water in a small pot. Heat until dissolved, then add orange juice. Simmer 2–3 minutes and cool.
Whisk egg yolks with sugar until pale.
Add walnuts, orange juice, and zest. Add warm water and mix until smooth.
Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Cool completely.
Brush cake base with syrup and spread walnut filling evenly.
Melt chocolate and butter. Pour glaze over cake.
Decorate and chill for at least 4 hours.
